Choose a domain name

A) Choose the extension
For worldwide visitors: choose the extensions: .com .net .org

Don’t consider anything else. Originally .org was for non-profit organizations, but now open for everyone. You may choose this extension if you like.

For Country local or mixed worldwide/local use: you can choose your country specific extension:
e.g. .ca for Canada or co.uk for UK

Hostgator doesn’t sell all extensions, some can only be sold in their specific country others
like .edu have special restrictions.

However Hostgator can host all extensions and all domains as long as you have access to and can change DNS (domain name servers) to point to your DNS at Hostgator.

B)decide what is the purpose of your website.
Is it about yourself, you may choose a domain with your name or family name in it.
Generally a website name should reflect what the site is about. Is it about your great hobby: golf, then obviously your site should have “golf” in it’s name.

Is Your website very narrow in it’s subject then the subject should be in the name.

Do you want to make a more broad website covering many aspects of e.g. Women’s life you could call it womensworld so the name says something about the content of the site. Womensworld or with a hyphen: womens-world would be good names.

C) Hyphen or not?
Some don’t like hyphens, some do. Google search engine treats a hyphen like a space and in regards to search engines a hyphen is OK to use. There’s pros and cons on hyphens. The name is easier to read but more difficult to remember and write correctly in the browser e.g. if you want visitors from off-line promotions.
I personally have several websites with hyphens in the name and it works fine.

D) Sniper targeted websites for money making
Google Sniper teaches you how to create supertargeted narrow websites with wordpress blogs using supertargeted keywords that literally forces Google search engine to high ranking the site.
If you want to earn money with Sniper targeted websites, you might want to get Google Sniper before you get a domain name. E) Subdomains
You may create as many subdomains on one domain as you like. If your domain is: www.mydomain.com a Subdomain looks like this:
www.subdomain.mydomain.com

F) Search for a domain name
Go to HostGator Domain Search
Input your desired domain name in the “register a domain box” to see if it is available and which Extensions are Available.
A List of alternative names to your search is shown in “We Also Suggest”

Choose HostGator Webhost

Register the domain name and get a host account.
Once you have found an available domain name, you can buy it right away…or go back to hostgator and create a host account and buy the domain in one process.

Click button “view webhosting plans”
My recommendation: Baby Plan $7.95/mth (unlimited domains + subdomains).
optional: hatchling plan $4.95/mth (only 1 domain name + unlimited subdomains)

click button “order now”
This will show up: “Register a New Domain” You are asked to choose a domain. Input the domain name You just found.

… or if you already have a domain name, input the name in “I Currently Have a Domain Name”

Your domain name registration details (your name, phone and email) are not secrets but open to the public.
Therefore consider using a secondary email and phone number if possible.

Congratulations – You registered a domain and a have Your own website hosted at Hostgator.

You received an email from Hostgator with Your IP address for the domain, DNS and login and pass

word for the CPanel which is the dashboard for your host account.
Cpanel is found at www.yourdomain.com/cpanel.

Your Domain name servers (DNS) look like this:
ns1234.hostgator.com
ns1235.hostgator.com
(the 4 digit number will be different. The 2nd. is 1 higher)

Check if the nameserver of your domain is correct and not hostgator’s generic DNS which are: ns1.hostgator.com and ns2.hostgator.com

Choose the box “Manage Your domain” and login with your domain name and password.

Are DNS Yours? or hostgator’s generic: ns1 and ns2.hostgator.com?
if not, input Yours: ns1234.hostgator.com first, then ns1235.hostgator.com (with YOUR 4-digit numbers), save and log-out.

Your are done, DNS point to your domain and everything should be fine.
It may take up to 24 hours before you find your website online (DNS need to resolve round the world).

Meanwhile try to ping your domain here: network-tools.com.

Input your domain and check “Ping” and “GO” and You should get a respons immediately from your domain IP which tells you: it’s there the Ping can find it. You can also check your DNS there.

Install WordPress Blog from Hostgator cPanel

How to Install WordPress Blog on your domain

WordPress can very easily be installed on you domain, subdomain or in a folder.

Here’s how to install wordpress Blog from Your Hostgator cPanel with the push of a button in 2 minutes.

Install the Blog in the root of Your domain or make a special folder e.g. www.domain.com/MyBlog
If you want to install in a subfolder, the folder will be created automatically during the wordpress installation and you should NOT have the folder or make it first. Just specify the name of the folder e.g. “myblog” and the folder will be created.

Login to your hostgator c-Panel and find the icon “fantastico de luxe”
Click the icon and you get to fantastico de luxe Control Panel.

Click WordPress in left menu.
choose New Installation / choose your domain name from the scroll down menu.
Optional: specify a folder name if you want it in a folder or just leave it blank and it wil be installed in the root directory of Your domain

choose Administrator-username / password
choose Admin nickname / Admin e-mail (your email address) / Site name / Description

click install wordpress / click finish installation.

That’s it, you’re done, you have wordpress installed.

Visit your domain to see how your Blog looks like. The design is the default theme.

Leave it blank if you want the blog in the root of your domain.
If you want a special folder for your blog e.g. www.yourdomain.com/blog put the folder name into the field and the folder will be created ( it should NOT be present before installing wordpress)

Choose:
username + password for your blog (login details for your blog)
choose nickname (for writing posts)
Input Your email. The name & description of the Blog (you can changed later)

Click install wordpress and you now have WordPress Blog on your domain with the default theme (design). The theme can be changed.

The Blog is installed as http://yourdomain.com without www, but you can easily change to http://www.yourdomain.com

Input the home page title, description and keywords. Save changes.
You will be loged out automatically – log in again.

There are numerous free wordpress themes available but I suggest you get a nicer theme with more features that comes with a paid theme.
Paid themes are a one time payment and may be used for Your unlimited domains.

I will suggest two paid theme: The

Install a wordpress theme + plugins on your Blog

Your wordpress blog is created with a default theme and you can choose to stay with this theme.

You can change theme very easily by just activating a new theme. But first a new theme should be uploaded to your host.

It’s easy to install a new theme in a wordpress blog.
A theme usually comes as a zip file and size 2-3 Mb. Unzip the file and you have a folder containing many files.

Upload the whole un-zipped folder to your host to the this folder/subfolder:
wp-content/themes

Once the new theme folder is uploaded to your host, it appears in the backoffice of your blog.
Now just click “activate” to activate a certain theme.

Install Flexsqueeze theme.
Installing this theme is no different than other themes.
Upload the whole folder “flexsqueeze” to your host to the folder/subfolder: wp-content/themes
Login to your wp-admin and the flexsqueeze theme will appear. Now just click “activate” and it is ready.

adjust blog width:
click left menu appearance / flexsqueeze theme options / in “blog width” set to 960 / 740 / 0 / 200

Plugins for your blog

Plugins are small usual free programs that ad features and functions to your blog.

MaxblogPress-Ping-Optimizer
MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer you need to register and subscribe to their newsletter to activate it.
Each time you make a post or change a comma you “Ping” to other blogcommunities that you made the post. However too many pings can get you banned.
This plugin is therefore important since it will limit the number of pings. fx. so you dont ping each time you update a post or change a little.

Global-Translator (if you want a translation option of your website).

Download the plugins (unzip if zip file) and upload the plugin folder to your domain in the plugin folder: wp-content/plugins

Activate the Plugins
Login to your wordpress admin, Click plugins and you will see the plugins you uploaded.

Now activate the plugins you want.

Edit settings of Platinum SEO Pack at the bottom of left menu “Platinum SEO”
Put in the home page title, description and keywords. Save changes.

Permalinks
Click permalinks in left menu “settings”
Check: Custom Structure and put this into the field: /%postname%
Save changes.

All post, no matter which category you choose will appear on the home page (your frontpage)
That’s how a blog works and leave it that way… and that’s what gives the “google juice” for better ranging in search engines. In addition each post has it’s own unique URL that could be found by search engines.

Your latest post on top, the posts are arranged according to date.

Make a post sticky
You can make a post sticky and that post will be on top.
Settings at “edit post”: “Make this post sticky ”
Number of posts on each page can be set at
Settings / Reading Settings: “Blog pages show at most”.
You can set posts to show only a summary on the front page with link: read more….

Disabling the visual editor when writing post
You will experience formatting errors when you switch between “visual” and “html” mode when writing a post. Linebreaks and blank line get messed up.
To avoid line break mess up avoid switching between the two modes and stick to either visual or html mode

.. or simply disable the Visual editor however then you’ll need a little html knowledge fx. how to make a link open in a new window (add: target=”_blank” just after the link address)

go to Users / your profile
Visual Editor
check “Disable the visual editor when writing”
update profile

Create static pages
Static pages are not post pages but pages with static text like normal webpages.
The only static page present when you installed the blog is the “about” page. You may add information about yourself on this “about” page.

You want to create these 4 static pages.
Click pages in left menu. Create new page and create these 4 pages:

contact-us
disclaimer
privacy-policy
terms-of-use

You may use the text from my static pages, just change the website address.

How to get traffic to your blog

Videos are getting more and more popular and is now huge online and is one of the hottest things on the internet!
After Youtube’s exponential growth about everyone is doing videos or having videos on their sites.

It’s easy to make a video and have an online video on your website or upload a video to some of the many video sharing sites which is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to get free traffic to your site.
If you’re are selling something on your website, videos on your site increases conversion rates and get you more sales.

Have You ever been thinking of having a video on your blog or website? … but not quite sure how to do it?

You can make a video with a videocamera or make a video out of a powerpoint slideshow with photos, background, text, special effects then record the slideshow with a screenrecorder and end up with a video which can be edited and you can add voice and sound effects as the final steps.

If you need to convert your videoformat e.g. from AVI to FLV or Mp4 or merge several videos

into one, this little video joiner can do the job:

Embedding a YouTube video
It’s easy to embed a youtube video on your site, just copy the “embed code” which can be found just beneath the video on youtube.com then paste the code into your sites html code. If you have a blog, paste the code into your post while in html mode and you have the youtube video on your site.

Embedding other videos on your site
You can easily embed other videos than Youtube videos on your blog or site. There are different ways to embed videos.. more or less complicated and with or without the use of javascript.

… but here’s a really easy and simple way to embed a video on your site. This method can handle Videos in the following formats: .flv, mp4, swf and downloaded youtube videos. FLV flash videos (file extension .flv) is the most common video file type these days and if you’ve downloaded a youtube video it is usually a flv video but it could be mp4 format as well.

Here’e a quick guide how to embed a FLV, MP4 or swf Video on your site.

1)
Get “JW Player for Flash”
it’s free for non-commercial use. Download it free here: JW player for Flash

Basically It’s a small player (a quite small file 80 kb called player.swf) which you upload to your host and embed on your blog or website.
It plays your video on the website.
Once you downloaded the player.swf file, Upload it to your host.

2)
Say your domain is: http://www.mydomain.com and your video is called: myvideo.flv

Upload your video to your host. Your video URL is now: http://www.mydomain.com/myvideo.flv
The JW player: player.swf (which you downloaded):
After uploading to your host the The jw player URL is: http://www.mydomain.com/player.swf

Copy and paste the html code below into your blog or website. If you have a blog: open a post and in the html mode paste the code and “update” the post. That’s it, you have embedded your video in the post.

Settings in the code above:
The file “player.swf” should not be changed. Just upload the file.
Your video name: “myvideo.flv” just change the name to Your video and with the correct extension (.flv, .mp4 or .swf) and change the URLs to Your domain.
Set the Video width and height as you like.
autoplay Feature:
a) If you want the video to autoplay, the last part of the code should read: autostart=true”>
b) If you dont want autoplay (click on an arrow in the video to start playing) the code should read: autostart=false”>

How to make a video from powerpoint slideshow

Many videos you see online is made from powerpoint slideshow with transitions between the slides, text that move in and out, photos and backgrounds. Then on top of that a “voice over” that explains what you see.

Such a video can be made with a powerpoint slideshow with recording of the screen and a little editing and adding the voice to the final video.

What your will need to make a video:
- Microsoft powerpoint or similar presentation software.
- Screen recorder to record your computer screen
- Video Editing software. Cut and add sound
- Convert your video to FLV format
- Optional: photos, backgrounds, templates, sound

1)
Microsoft powerpoint or similar presentation software. “Keynote” presentation software for Mac users.
Free open source alternative to Microsoft office powerpoint for PC or Mac: OpenOffice.org
The “powerpoint” software in OpenOffice package is called “Impress” which can edit and save .ppt powerpoint documents. Or just use the default document format, basically you dont need .ppt documents since you just record what is shown on your screen and make it a video from that.

A Free open source option is CamStudio. It Records screen activity from the Windows desktop and save into an AVI video file.

Editing software. Cut your video and add voice and music.
Avidemux is a free video editor for PC/Mac/linux. Download Avidemux here

It should be possible to save your video as .FLV Format which is what you want, however I couldn’t make it do it.

Instead I use the video joiner (and video converter) below to convert from AVI to .FLV video format.
